Oil Painting on a 24" x 24" Linen Panel. Titled: "The Morning Harvest"

The Morning Harvest is coming closer to completion! Fall has been busy and I have been carefully working on this painting in between other projects. I am taking my time and considering each brushstroke.  Follow the progress of this latest original oil painting, inspired by my own chickens and my love of traditional wattle fencing, this 24" × 24" oil painting captures a quiet moment of country life. Follow along as I bring the final details together, with the original painting expected to be available by mid-November, just in time for Christmas!

This Painting is on a 24" x 24" Linen Panel. Titled: "The Morning Harvest"

This is inspired by my very own chickens and my love for Wattle Fencing. I don't have a Wattle Fence but if I had the time, I would certainly undertake making one. I still have quiet a way to go, progress will speed up after I finish her chest, hands, hair and hands! The rest will flow.

There comes a point in every painting where it doesn't quite look finished—but it finally begins to feel alive. This piece has reached that stage.

The central figure has slowly emerged through layers of warm and cool tones, careful observation, and countless small adjustments. Her face, hands, and the light filtering beneath her sun hat became the emotional anchor for the painting before anything else. I wanted viewers to pause with her—to feel the quiet concentration of an ordinary moment transformed by light.

The surrounding elements are still finding their place. The hens are only partially developed, existing as loose shapes. I actually enjoy this stage because it reveals the structure beneath the finished illusion. Every completed painting begins as a collection of decisions, corrections, and unanswered questions.

The woven wattle fence stretches across the background, providing rhythm and texture without competing with the figure. Behind it, the trees remain soft and atmospheric, allowing the eye to settle naturally on the subject. It's a balancing act between detail and suggestion—knowing where to speak clearly and where to whisper.

One of the things I love most about painting is how light tells the story. The wide-brimmed hat creates a pocket of shade across her face while reflecting warm sunlight underneath its rim. Those subtle shifts in temperature—from golden highlights to cool shadows—give the portrait its sense of depth and quiet intimacy.

As I continue working, the chickens will gain form, the foreground will become more cohesive, and the landscape will receive its final refinements. But I also want to preserve some of the freshness that's visible at this stage. Loose brushwork has an honesty that can disappear if every inch is overworked.

Sharing a painting before it's finished is a little like inviting someone into the studio while the conversation is still unfolding. You see the questions alongside the answers, the revisions alongside the successes.

That's part of the beauty of the process.

The finished painting will tell one story. The work in progress tells another—and both are worth sharing.

Thank you for sharing in my Art Progress!

Salty Vaughan

For 18 years, my little best friend Salty was by my side through every painting, drawing, and silk-dyed creation. Sadly, he passed away on 02/09/2026, leaving my husband and me heartbroken. Salty had a remarkable, almost human-like intelligence. We miss his playful jokes—like sitting in our spot and actually laughing out loud about it! If I set something on the arm of the couch, he would quickly point to it, so I’d move it and make room for him. He was incredibly vocal, and if he wanted something, he wouldn’t stop barking and trying to talk until he got what he wanted.  I’d ask him to show me, and off he’d go, happily leading the way—usually straight to the refrigerator! I have the fondest memories of this little gentleman, and he will be deeply missed until we meet again.

During this time of mourning, I created a coloring book for children to help them cope with losing a pet. This book was published and is for sale on Amazon Titled: "My Pet in My Heart"

Now, I am back to work on my book and hopefully it will be published soon.

I just finished my first oil painting titled "The StoryTeller." for the book Titled: "The Fairy Knot Adventures". This project excites me because it’s such a great escape from the real world! The book will be truly unique, with illustrations taking center stage on every page. As a child, I always wished books had more artwork—there never seemed to be enough—so I want this book to fill that gap and transport readers into another world where they can enjoy both the story and the art again and again. The book is now complete, and the remaining illustrations will only be revealed inside its pages. Thanks for joining me on this amazing adventure!

Book in the Works!

1/10/2026 2:11:41 PM

Painting my Fairies has grown into a planned book— but not just any book! It’s a blend of fairies and art, with the first one designed to feel like an art book that tells a story. It will start with this painting, flow into pencil drawings, and as the story unfolds, feature more paintings. I can’t reveal too much yet, but it’s going to be big! A truly unique concept, with many first-release copies meant to become heirlooms passed down for generations. That’s all I can share for now, but I’ll post updates on my blog before sharing them on social media. Wishing everyone a magical New Year!

What's that Color Doing?

3/22/2014 5:09:30 PM

Red Website

As an artist color is a very important tool used daily. When painting there are colors chosen, matched, and manipulated to get the best results for what I want to convey to the viewer. This morning, I was enjoying viewing many artworks and artist’s websites and I began contemplating my choice of website colors and the effect these colors have on my viewers. After all, there have been many studies on how colors evoke different feelings and responses from individuals.

I have noticed this especially with my paintings. I love the dark values used in paintings of the old Masters while in reality, I find that these paintings are among my last to sell. Now I’m not saying it is the dark values, it may very well simply be my technique or color choices. I have had people tell me they don’t like the darker paintings. Although we each see things differently, color studies seem to reveal a link between color and its effect on people. What about the value of color and its effect?

I asked myself just what kind of feelings and responses is my website color scheme evoking?  Thus began my research into color and marketing your products.

During my research, I discovered one commonality and that is when making color choices, it is important to know who your target audience is to convey the right message. I can relate because this is a lot like the considerations one takes when deciding upon the concept for a painting. I have decided that the best approach for me is to think of my website page as one single painting and where I want the viewer’s eye to go. First, I want people to look at my art but not have a difficult time navigating my site. I want viewers to easily find links and information that is important to each work of art. Right now my website’s main color is RED and the value seems quiet bright up against the black I chose for my artwork background thus making it harder for the viewer to focus on the painting.

According to Dan Green’s article on “http://www.thegreeninternetgroup.com/color-a-critical-marketing-choice” , The color red is known for evoking feelings of  Aggressive, assertive, intense, strength, vitality, life-sustaining, passionate, courageous, insightful, love, passion, danger, warning, excitement, food, impulse, action, adventure, vitality If people are able to see energy, they’d probably see red (pun intended). Red is the color associated with activity, passion, romance, and adventure. This color is the eternal call to action. In design, you’d do very well to use this color if you are offering something exciting and new to your consumers. It tends to make us hungry and has proven particularly effective for selling food and food supplements. – but not a great selection for a diet coach!

I know what I want out of my website and that changes must be made to obtain these goals. I don't want my viewer's pulse rate and heart rate to increase and then they get hungry and leave my site. I want viewers to calmly stay longer on my website and I want the viewer’s eye on my paintings. In conclusion, I need a color that is more calming and my preference is neutral tones so that my art will appear brighter and be the main focus. According to my research, blue is the favorite color here in America and it seems a good acceptable color worldwide. Since I sell my art in many Countries, I need a good color that appeals to a broader audience and does not take away from my work. I don’t know yet what color scheme I will choose, but I cannot wait to see the changes if any on my website analytics. Don’t get me wrong, I know all about statistics and that these color marketing studies are not 100% correct. I do know a little about art and it is true that you guide they eye through color and value to where you want your viewer to look. Oh by the way, I was not able to find any reference to color value and marketing except that higher value colors are found more relaxing. Personally, I find the darker values more relaxing but hey, that’s just me.
